Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can put a stop to fast-moving baseballs and others can weather hurricane-force winds. How?

As far as hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are thoroughly tested for impact resistance.

Tests consist of shooting a two-by-four at the window to make sure glass keeps intact. We use our hurricane cannon to propel the wood, which moves 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We figured, if we could engineer a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could come up with a solution that could protect from home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was approached to help outfit a historic building by Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s just what we did.

We retrofitted our hurricane cannon to test the home run-resistant windows. We fired baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would mimic the speed of a home run.

Our tempered glass withstood the baseballs best because it’s stronger and safer than commonly used annealed glass.

All About Physics

It requires a speed of more than 100 mph and a height of more than 100 feet to launch a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s situation, we found the baseballs would be going at about 60 mph upon hitting windows.

But we did more than what was expected and tested impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not concerned about an MLB home run hurling at your residence, there are a lot of reasons to use tough, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s ideal for homeowners who want an extra level of security from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are bringing up the next great baseball player.

Look at the strengths and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Durable glass similar to what is used in car windows.
  • Used where damages from broken glass are a concern.
  • Usually shatters into small, square parts as opposed to sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t break apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To find out more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Albuquerque at 505-373-1296. Or, request a free, in-home consultation online.
